Executive Director Greg Dye with DLC mascot Maky.

Dear friends,

Thank you for being a part of the Duke Lemur Center’s Stay Away 5K this past weekend!

In April, when the DLC decided to organize this event, we were excited about its potential to bring people from across the country and around the world together to do something fun and help lemurs. We were not fully prepared, however, for the tremendous and exciting response we received.

As many of you know, the DLC temporarily closed its doors in March due to the COVID-19 crisis. Since that time our animal care, veterinary, and curatorial teams have been working tirelessly to maintain our high quality of care for every single animal on site. The money raised from this event will help offset the revenue we’ve lost with several of our programs being closed, and 100% of the donations raised will go directly to our lemur care and conservation programs.

We are so proud and humbled to share the incredible results from this event with you.

Stay Away 5K results:

The 5K raised almost $75,000!

We enlisted participation from more than 1,800 runners and lemur enthusiasts.

We had registrants from all 50 US states and the District of Columbia, and from at least 11 additional countries, including Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, Finland, France, Netherlands, United Kingdom, Afghanistan, Saudi Arabia, and Vietnam!

We had more than 55 teams. Prize winners will be posted by 6/5/2020 on the DLC’s 5K page.

The largest team was Credit Suisse, with 55 runners.

Note: For those of you whose registrations included t-shirt/s, we’ll get them to you a.s.a.p. Some were mailed this weekend and others will be mailed in the coming week. A huge thank you to everyone who submitted artwork for the t-shirt design contest and to all of our finalists and the ultimate two contest winners, Evan Tynan and Julian “Mr. Lemur.”

Mark your calendars for next year!

We’re already planning another virtual 5K for the weekend after Memorial Day next year, so pencil us in on your calendar now for June 5-6, 2021 and check back to register next spring.

Thank you so much for making this event such a success. Please take a few minutes to enjoy this week’s newly released, wonderful video about the DLC by UNC-TV!

Warmest regards,

From all of us at the Duke Lemur Center
