Executive Director Greg Dye with DLC mascot Maky. Winning t-shirt design by Evan Tynan.

Thank you!

Thank you for being a part of the Duke Lemur Center’s Stay Away 5k this weekend!

In April 2020, when the DLC decided to organize this event, we were excited about its potential to bring people from across the country and around the world together to do something fun and help lemurs. We were not fully prepared, however, for the tremendous and exciting response we received.

As many of you know, the DLC temporarily closed its doors in March due to the COVID-19 crisis. Since that time our animal care, veterinary, and curatorial teams have been working tirelessly to maintain our high quality of care for every single animal on site. The money raised from this event will help offset the revenue we’ve lost with several of our programs being closed, and 100% of the donations raised will go directly to our lemur care and conservation programs.

We are so proud and humbled to share the incredible results from this event with you.

2020 results

The DLC’s first-ever Stay Away 5k raised almost $75,000!

We enlisted participation from more than 1,800 runners and lemur enthusiasts.

We had registrants from all 50 US states and the District of Columbia, and from at least 11 additional countries, including Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, Finland, France, Netherlands, United Kingdom, Afghanistan, Saudi Arabia, and Vietnam! Click here to see photos from participants around the world!

We had more than 55 teams. Of those, largest team was Credit Suisse, with 55 runners.

A huge thank you to everyone who submitted artwork for the t-shirt design contest and to all of our finalists and the ultimate two contest winners, Evan Tynan and Julian “Mr. Lemur.”

Save the date for 2021!

Mark your calendars for next year! We’re already planning another virtual 5k for next spring, so pencil us in for Earth Day weekend—April 24-25, 2021. Registration opens on March 22, 2021 via the Stay Away 5k homepage.

Thank you so much for making this event such a success!

P.S. Please take a few minutes to enjoy this week’s newly released, wonderful video about the DLC by UNC-TV!
