Madagascar Hot Chocolate
While it’s not chilly in Madagascar this time of year, a mug of hot chocolate with Madagascar-inspired flavors is always the right choice! This recipe uses ingredients that are grown in Madagascar, like cocoa and vanilla. Feel free to add your own twist with other Malagasy flavors like cinnamon, clove, coconut, or coffee!
Ingredients:
1/3 cup cocoa powder*
¾ cup sugar*
1 teaspoon vanilla*
4 cups milk (try using a plant-based milk, like coconut, for a different taste)
1/3 cup boiling water
Any other flavorings as desired
(For homemade marshmallows, check out this recipe)
*All of these ingredients can be exported from Madagascar! Some stores even sell special Madagascar vanilla sugar. While you’re looking for ingredients, see if you can find any of these items that come from Madagascar.
Directions
First, combine cocoa powder, sugar, water, and a pinch of salt in a medium saucepan. Bring to a boil while stirring, until smooth.
Add the milk and continue to stir over medium heat, be sure not to boil.
Once the cocoa has reached the desired temperature, remove from heat, stir in the vanilla.
Pour into mugs and top with your choice of toppings, like marshmallows, whipped cream, or sprinkles!
