Thank you!
Thank you for being a part of the Duke Lemur Center’s Stay Away 5k this weekend!
As many of you know, the Lemur Center temporarily closed its doors in March 2020 due to the COVID-19 crisis. Since that time our animal care, veterinary, and curatorial teams have been working tirelessly to maintain our high quality of care for every single animal on site. The money raised from this event will help offset the revenue we’ve lost due to the closure of our onsite tour programs, and 100% of the donations raised will go directly to the DLC’s lemur care and conservation initiatives. We’re so grateful for your support!
We are so proud and humbled to share the incredible results from this event with you.
2021 Results
The DLC’s second annual Stay Away 5k raised nearly $77,000!
The event drew 2,189 participants from all over the world, including Australia, Canada, Germany, the United Kingdom, Tanzania, and the Netherlands! Together we ran, walked, hiked, swam, and even rode horses to raise awareness of lemurs and to benefit lemur care and conservation at the DLC.
Registrations included 265 teams, of which 42 teams had seven or more members and were eligible for the contest drawings. Congratulations to the winners of our team contest: Becky’s Birthday 04/16 and LI<3Lemurs! Click here for a list of teams with fewer than seven members.
The largest teams were Credit Suisse with 71 registrants, and OUHSC DCM Team Q with 50 registrants. Thank you so much for your support!
Special thanks to everyone who submitted artwork for the t-shirt design contest, and to the two contest winners: Sally Bornbusch and Janine Dworin.
Shirts update
If you registered prior to 4/20/2021, your shirt is in the mail to you. Those who registered after that date, we are expecting the shirts to be finished by May 4 and in the mail ASAP. Thanks so much for your patience!
Save the date for 2022!
We enjoyed having the 5K on Earth Day weekend so much, we’ve decided to make it a tradition! Please mark your calendar for Earth Day weekend—April 23-24, 2022! Registration will open next March via the Stay Away 5k homepage.
Next year, we’ll start our plans earlier for both the shirt design contest and registration process to allow more time for shirts to get to our early registrants before the race. Until then, we invite you to stay in touch with all of the happenings here at the DLC by reading our seasonal e-Newsletters. Browse previous issues within our newsletter archive, or sign up for the mailing list!
Thank you so much for making this event such a success!
