We’ve just completed the first week of our summer 2023 internship program! These seven interns were selected from a pool of more 100 applicants because of their enthusiasm for exploring careers in this field and their commitment to learning about and engaging in the DLC’s mission. They’ll spend 10 weeks learning from the Lemur Center’s expert staff in the departments of Husbandry, Education, and Science Communications. We’re thrilled to welcome them into the DLC family!

Husbandry:
Troye, student at University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill studying Biology, Chemistry, and Marine Science
Arabella, recent graduate of North Carolina State University with a bachelor’s degree in Zoology

Hannah, recent graduate of University of Tennessee with a bachelor’s degree in Animal Science

Our intern cohort is smaller than usual, as several of our Intern Managers are doing fieldwork in Madagascar for extended periods and our Intern Coordinator is away on maternity leave. Don’t worry: We plan for the Animal Welfare, Field Research, and Paleontology internships to resume in summer 2024!

Although our intern cohort is smaller than in the past, we’re very excited that all of this summer’s internship positions are paid ones!
Did you know that until 2022, the Duke Lemur Center offered only UNPAID undergraduate internships? Summer ’22 was the first year we were able offer some funded intern positions, thanks to support received from donors willing to provide $7,500 to cover one intern’s hourly compensation for the 10-week program.
Since introducing paid internship positions, we have received more applications than ever before, making the applicant pool more competitive and including applicants from a broader range of racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
