New date announced!

UPDATED 10 SEPT 2018: Due to the strong potential for Hurricane Florence to make landfall on or near the NC coast as a Category 3 or 4 storm, and the expected flooding and downed trees across the state in the days that follow, we are forced to postpone the Mission: Madagascar event from September 15 to a new date of October 6.

We are sorry for the inconvenience to your schedule, especially if you planned to travel from another state. We are busily preparing to “hunker down” and secure the center to keep the lemurs safe during the storm.

The new date for the Mission: Madagascar event is Saturday, October 6th – same time (6 p.m. – 9 p.m. with VIP reception at 5 p.m. for $1,000+ donors). We hope this date works for you and that you will plan to join us!

An evening to remember

Want to have a direct impact on saving lemurs in their native habitat? Join us for our first-annual fall benefit, with all donations funding the DLC’s critical conservation work in Madagascar!

On Saturday, October 6, Mission: Madagascar will provide you the opportunity to stroll along the tour path and visit exclusive behind-the-scenes areas at the Duke Lemur Center while getting to know other lovers of lemurs, science, and Madagascar! Unlike other DLC events geared toward families and kids, this celebration is intended for adults.

Mission: Madagascar Overview

Mission: Madagascar

Join us for a fall benefit to support the Duke Lemur Center’s Madagascar Conservation Programs. It will be an evening to remember!

Date and time:

Saturday, October 6th from 6:00 p.m. 'til 9:00 p.m. **Due to the strong potential for Hurricane Florence to make landfall on or near the NC coast as a Category 3 or 4 storm, and the expected flooding and downed trees across the state in the days that follow, we are forced to postpone the Mission: Madagascar event from September 15 to a new date of October 6.**

Exclusive VIP reception:

For Mission: Madagascar donors of $1,000 or more, we will offer exclusive lemur viewing opportunities and time with Charlie Welch (who manages the DLC-SAVA Conservation project) and Andrea Katz (who oversees the DLC's ex-situ conservation programs) at 5:00 p.m.

The Duke Lemur Center joins forces with the people of Madagascar to protect lemurs and the many other endemic, rare, and threatened animals and plants that once thrived on the "Eighth Continent." Support the DLC's Madagascar Conservation Programs and join us for our event on September 15!

Relax and be happy among other animal-lovers on this special once-a-year evening at the Duke Lemur Center! From 6:00-7:30 PM, enjoy the twilight tropical ambiance of the DLC’s tour path, snacking on heavy hors d'oeuvres and exploring the grounds with a glass of fine wine or craft beer in hand. Meet the lemurs and share stories with DLC staff and researchers. See behind-the-scenes areas like the prep kitchen, where our lemurs’ meals are made fresh every day; and talk to the DLC’s veterinarians on your tour of the surgery and examination room. These spaces are rarely opened to the public – don’t miss this chance!

Starting at 7:30, guests will be treated to a short presentation by conservation superstars Sir Charlie Welch and Lady Andrea Katz, the husband-wife team who spearhead the DLC’s work “on the ground” in Madagascar. Charlie and Andrea have devoted their lives to saving Madagascar’s threatened lemurs and forests, and their story shows how passionate, devoted people and organizations like the Lemur Center can make a big impact on saving endangered species.

Our wonderful selection of wines is being donated by Leland Little Auctions, and locally brewed beer is being donated by Durham’s own Fullsteam Brewery — including an exclusive brew named after our newest blue-eyed black lemur, Ranomasina!

To learn more about the DLC’s conservation work in Madagascar, please visit https://lemur.duke.edu/madagascar. Our conservation work averages $300,000 annually and is fully funded by grants and private donations, including ticket purchases for this event. Thank you so much for your support!

Please note: Unlike other DLC events that are geared toward families with children, MISSION: MADAGASCAR is for adults only.

The purpose of the event is to celebrate our Madagascar Conservation Programs and raise much-needed funding to support its operations, which total $300,000 annually and are fully funded by grants and private donations — including ticket purchases for this event! Your reservation and payment is tax deductible as a gift to the Duke Lemur Center’s Madagascar Conservation Programs, less a $20 per guest premium.

*What is a premium? IRS guidelines and Duke University require that we estimate a value for what you receive as a result of this event – other than warm fuzzies for helping our highly worthy cause with your donation, that is! That amount must be deducted from the actual donation amount to us. $20 per person is a bargain, but is a fair estimate of the cost of food, drinks, and access to the tour path.
