Update September 9, 2025: Rodelinda’s male infant has been named Aurelius! At six months old, he aged out of the Ultimate Adoption program, so he was named by his primary caretaker. His name was inspired by Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius and fits perfectly with older siblings Egeria and Albus—all named in the DLC’s ancient Roman theme for Coquerel’s sifakas. Aurelius is a shy little lemur who tends to stick close to his big siblings when navigating the forest. He is mom Rodelinda’s eighth offspring, her third with current breeding partner Johann. We can’t wait to watch as Aurelius grows into a strong, healthy adult!
Meet Rodelinda’s male infant! This critically endangered Coquerel’s sifaka, born on March 9, is 17-year-old Rodelinda’s eighth offspring and joins dad Johann, older sister Egeria, and older brother Albus in this family of five.
Rodelinda’s infant is incredibly photogenic and very laid back, content to cling tight to mom or other family members. Keepers who care for the family have said that he looks at the world a little differently, mostly from the comfort of his mom’s back. As an experienced mother, Rodelinda is very comfortable letting other family members take turns holding and grooming the infant. Two-year-old Egeria has been especially interested in her baby brother, which is a promising sign that she will make a great mother one day!
At the DLC, Coquerel’s sifakas are generally given Roman names, ranging from emperors to mythical heroes, gods, and goddesses.
With a tax-deductible donation of $20,000 to the DLC’s Animal Care Fund or General Operations Fund, you can name and symbolically adopt Rodelinda’s infant! To get started, please email us at adoptalemur@duke.edu. We can’t wait to hear from you!
