Volunteer Technician Assistant
Perform a variety of tasks to assist technicians with the care of rare primates at the Duke Lemur Center.
Work Performed
Perform supportive tasks to assist primate technicians in the daily health care of primates including raking of enclosures and daily water changes.
Perform supportive tasks to assist the technicians with building SOPs including the daily cleaning of the kitchen, common area and driveway.
Perform routine tasks of separating, washing and drying of staff and animal dirty laundry
Perform supportive task of creating primate enrichment as directed by primate technicians
Perform supportive tasks to assist with special projects as requested by the primate technicians including, but not limited to, re-branching of enclosures, cracking chow, and additional cleaning.
Experience
No previous experience is required.
Skills
Ability to follow detailed instructions, work independently and pay close attention to detail.
Physical Requirements
Ability to work in an outdoor environment with different terrain and seasonal temperatures
Time Commitment
One four-hour shift per week and a six month commitment. Weekly shifts are divided into morning and afternoon shifts. Morning shifts are from 8:15 – 12:00 and afternoon shifts are from 12-4. Weekend shifts available with similar hours.
Important
Technician Assistant positions fill up quickly. If this is a position you are interested in and there are no openings, consider becoming a tour guide. Current tour volunteers are given priority for Technician Assistant openings.
All Technician Assistants are required :
- To have proof of a current TB test
- To sign a legal release
- To have proof of current health insurance

Work Performed
Guiding educational tours for groups of up to 15 individuals
Experience
No previous experience is required.
Skills
Effective communicator
Comfortable speaking to large and diverse groups of visitors.
Must be willing to learn and memorize the DLC’s mission, objectives, and all species information for those animals on the tour path.
Physical Requirements
Ability to work in an outdoor environment with different terrain and seasonal temperatures. Must be able to stand for long periods of time.
Time Commitment
One tour per week (appx. 2 hours) and a six month commitment. The DLC conducts tours Monday-Saturday year-round and some holidays.
All Education volunteers are required :

- To sign a legal release
- To have proof of current health insurance
